Biogas is a renewable energy, produced via the fermentation and decomposition of animal dung retained inside an airtight tank (known as digester).

In the context of the project in Madhya Pradesh, the biogas will used for daily cooking and heating purposes. The use of biogas will replace the use of firewood and thereby reduce the rate of deforestation in the project area. The fermented animal dung (known as biogas slurry) is rich in nutrients and can be used as an organic fertilizer for agriculture.

The project aims to construct 13,000 biogas units. Each household in the project will be provided with one biogas unit, allowing access to clean and renewable energy for daily cooking needs.

 

CONTEXT

Most Indian families are relying on wood and kerosene to fulfill their energetic needs. Each week, women and children are collecting wood and contribute to deforestation.
Traditional cooking methods based on firewood lead to respiratory and ocular infections among users, mainly women and children. Eventually, the use of chemical fertilizers reduces the soil yield and its fertility.
Providing each family with biogas tank directly contributes to limit the pressure on wood resources and allows beneficiaries to produce their own natural fertilizers for their crops.

OBJECTIVES

This project is implemented in 6 districts (Jabalpur, Narsinghpur, Mandla, Chindwara, Seoni and Balaghat) in Madhya Pradesh state in India. It has 4 specific goals:

  • Developing renewable energies through the construction and maintenance of individual biodigester
  • Improving socioeconomic and environmental status of the beneficiaries
  • Financing the project through carbon offset
  • Promoting sustainable agriculture with the organic fertilizer (use of biogas slurry)

This project involves:

  • Identification of beneficiary households
  • Workshops on the construction and the maintenance of the biogas units
  • Construction of the 13,000 biogas units within the first 3 years of the project
  • Monitoring on waste management, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption
  • Capitalization of the experience with technical notes and videos

TECHNOLOGY

Each biogas unit comes with a biodigester and a gas-stove designed to fit the households’ energy needs for cooking and heating. These biogas units are made of cement with a latest generation HDPE dome.

Minimum 2 to 3 livestock’s are necessary for a 2m3 unit. Biogas will be used for cooking purpose and allow households to cook 3 meals per day. The fermented animal dung from the biodigester is released in the form of slurry, which is high in nutrients and can be used as an organic fertilizer for agriculture. The project beneficiaries will be trained to use the biogas slurry for agriculture.

IMPACTS

Environmental impacts :

  • Implementation of a renewable, clean and sustainable energy technology

Socioeconomic impacts:

  • Reduction of expenses on fuel and chemical fertilizers
  • Improved access to clean source of energy: time savings especially for women and children who spent long hours to collect wood for cooking
  • Reduction of respiratory and ocular infections related to indoor air pollution

EXPECTED RESULTS

Between December 2017 and November 2022, around 13 000 biogas units will be constructed and monitored until 2028 in the 6 districts of Madhya Pradesh where the project is implemented.

13 000 households (with an average of 5,3 persons per households for a total of 69 000 beneficiaries) will directly benefit from this clean energy.
Each unit is expected to reduce around 7t CO2 eq. per year per household. The overall project will save 70 000t CO2 eq. per year.
