An extension of Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s artistic work and environmental commitment, GoodPlanet, a recognised public interest foundation, aims to make ecology and humanism a central issue in order to encourage people to take concrete action for the Earth and its inhabitants.

Created in 2005 in the form of a non-profit organisation under the French Law of 1901, GoodPlanet was declared a public interest foundation in 2009 and became the ‘GoodPlanet Foundation’.

The GoodPlanet Foundation takes action in three main areas:

Environmental and solidarity field projects

Its United Carbon Action Programme has allowed the GoodPlanet Foundation to support 41 projects in 21 countries to date, enabling the construction of some 6,000 biogas reservoirs, the installation of 10,000 solar cookers, and the construction of 8 bioclimatic schools to benefit over 150,000 people.

Since 2005, the Foundation has been developing artistic (7 billion Others, HUMAN, etc.) and educational projects to raise awareness among the general public worldwide. In July 2015, Paris City Council entrusted the Domaine de Longchamp to the Foundation for a 30-year period in order to turn it into a site dedicated to ecology and humanism. Free and open to all, the Fondation GoodPlanet-Domaine de Longchamp opened its doors on 13 May 2017.

Helping companies and institutions implement an environmentally responsible approach

The Foundation runs in-house awareness-raising projects for businesses and institutions, in addition to support for carbon and responsible food policies and financing for field projects. In 2015, the GoodPlanet Foundation launched the programme “The solution on a platter!”, which promotes 60 solutions and 100 concrete initiatives for responsible food choices.

Taking action builds Happiness

Taking action builds happiness! Ten years after the creation of the GoodPlanet Foundation, we live in an ever-warmer world, where conflicts and their shares of refugees proliferate, a world in which societies continue their blind pursuit of over-consumption. The reality of climate change and the pressing need to take action on a level with the issue at stake concerns all of us without exception.

Yann Arthus-Bertrand

Our missions

The GoodPlanet Foundation aims to raise awareness of current environmental and social issues among all stakeholders. It puts in place field projects to take action for the planet and its inhabitants, thus offering everyone the chance to become an agent of change and work alongside the Foundation. These projects help improve the environment and the quality of life for populations worldwide and to combat climate change.

The Foundation also provides philanthropists with a means to support projects that have a strong environmental and social impact, whether on the ground or through educational projects on the environment and solidarity.

TAKING ACTION, BECAUSE THE BEST IS YET TO COME…

Each of us, whether as individuals, businesses or local authorities, can take action and shape a more humane, fair and generous world at our own level. We need everyone’s involvement to tackle current and future ecological and human issues, but more importantly in order to better live together.

With this in mind, the GoodPlanet Foundation puts in place field projects to take action for the planet and its inhabitants, thus offering everyone the chance to become an agent of change and work alongside the Foundation. These projects help improve the environment and the quality of life for populations worldwide and to combat climate change.

The United Carbon Action Programme focuses on agriculture, forests, waste and energy. For example, we encourage schooling for children through the construction of bioclimatic schools. All of our international solidarity projects illustrate the infinite number of sustainable and realistic solutions that exist to help us build the world of tomorrow.

The Foundation also assists companies with their CSR policies.

RAISING AWARENESS, TO ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO TAKE ACTION…

In order to encourage everyone to protect the environment and live together, the GoodPlanet Foundation organises various types of events throughout the year that are designed to reveal the beauty and fragility of the Planet and its inhabitants. Because we protect what we love, what we appreciate and what we know, the Foundation places the spotlight on stunning images in order to better raise awareness.

Photographic exhibitions, film screenings, themed campaigns and local entertainment… all of our events are suitable for young audiences and the general public and pay tribute to the exceptional landscapes and portraits that Nature has created, hoping to reach into the hearts of visitors.

INFORM AND EDUCATE, BECAUSE KNOWLEDGE LEADS TO ACTION…

Recognising that in order to take concrete action, we must first understand ecological and human issues, the GoodPlanet Foundation provides information and tailored educational content to all age groups from all walks of life.

Thanks to the GoodPlanet magazine, environment-related news and online press and a collection of works, the Foundation aims to give everyone the keys they need to understand the environment and the issues surrounding it. Its editorial content endeavours to provide factual and pluralistic information so that everyone can forge their own opinion and choose to take action at their own level.

Strong believers of the concept that ecology and living together should be learnt from a young age, GoodPlanet also develops free dedicated tools – posters and educational kits – to educate children on the issues surrounding sustainable development. Because it is up to them to build the world of tomorrow, which means that we need to raise their awareness of these issues today.

Our values

Committed to respecting the environment and its inhabitants through two main areas of action: awareness-raising and action on the ground, the GoodPlanet Foundation withholds from any form of moralism, shaming and proselytism. Its messages are based on hard facts which it disseminates with complete neutrality. It therefore leaves everyone the possibility to form their own opinion and take action in an informed manner.

Our in-house actions

The GoodPlanet Foundation carries out its own actions to promote sustainable development in-house:

  • Conducting a carbon footprint assessment every year and offsetting the CO2 emissions generated by its activities (travel, energy, purchases, printing, etc.),
  • Waste sorting: 4 bins including a compost heap,
  • Use of ecological cleaning products (EU Ecolabel),
  • Staff travel via electric vehicle where possible (electric scooter or car, hybrid cars) and use of a shuttle bus for carpooling,
  • Possibility of one day of telework per month,
  • Meals with maximum use of local, organic and seasonal products,
  • Recto-verso printing and use of paper from sustainably managed forests,
  • Printing of awareness-raising media (books, postcards, calendar, etc.) on certified paper.

INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE

In order to disseminate its messages and roll out its activities more widely, the GoodPlanet Foundation has joined forces with an entity in Belgium that develops its own programmes and runs joint operations with GoodPlanet.

An International Committee was set up in 2012 to establish the joint operating rules. It brings together the two entities and aims to welcome others in the future.

It is composed of the leaders of the various entities, as well as one member of each national branch. These national branches fully participate in the development of the Foundation, its creativity and the dissemination of its message. We hope to build on this initiative and open new international branches.

GOODPLANET BELGIUM

In May 2011, the GoodPlanet Foundation launched the GoodPlanet.be fund in Belgium in partnership with the GREEN association and the King Baudouin Foundation. It primarily developed educational programmes for children, handing out educational poster kits in schools and organising stays to raise awareness on sustainable development as part of the “GoodPlanet Challenge”.

In December 2012, the GREEN association – which will henceforth be leading the GoodPlanet projects in Belgium -was renamed GoodPlanet Belgium. Over 60 projects and 50 employees have thus joined the GoodPlanet ecosystem, helping diversify its expertise and increase its impact.

SUPERVISORY BODIES

The GoodPlanet Foundation is assessed throughout the year in order to ensure the quality of its governance, the impact of its programmes and its good financial management.

AUDIT COMMITTEE

Since receiving the IDEAS Label from the Institut de Développement de l’Ethique et de l’Action pour la Solidarité [Institute for Development, Education and Action for Solidarity] in 2012, the GoodPlanet Foundation has submitted to an audit every year. This label is awarded in recognition of budgetary rigour, programme efficiency and quality governance. GoodPlanet is thus assessed by an audit committee, an internal oversight body that actively monitors compliance with the rules of governance in place and the prevention of identified risks. It records any shortcomings and informs the Board of Directors which then takes the necessary decisions. It also puts forward proposals.

It is composed of:

Olivier LE GRAND, Treasurer, chairs the Audit Committee
