6 billion Others
Scientists

Global warming is no longer a hypothesis but a fact. The phenomenon is global and affects various aspects of our world and our lives, so scientists from diverse disciplines have worked to gain the most complete understanding of it. These scientists have written thousands of pages of articles and/or technical reports ; but being interviewed by the 6 billion Others’ team, they summarized the critical points in one or two minutes.

Climate change: a national security issue We need changes in lifestyles everywhere in the world How we discovered we could read the history of the climate in the ice.
"Climate change is usually considered as an environmental issue (…) but in recent times we can see that climate change has a common denominator and it is national security." "I keep telling everybody when they ask me: 'what changes in lifestyles?' I tell them 'start with your diet, start eating less meat.’" "And so, about 30 years ago, whereas we had imagined that greenhouse gases could play a part, we proved it for the first time by comparing climate variation and greenhouse gas variations that we were measuring in the air bubbles."

Droughts and conflict in Soudan Stephen Schneider vs Skeptics The Maldives and the rising sea level
"The declining productivity of the land induced some people to expand horizontally. And by expanding their agricultural land, they block the nomadic routes that are natural routes used by the pastoralists." "It’s complete nonsense to argue that we need to have absolute proof, because we don’t do that in military decisions, we don’t do that in medical decisions, we don’t do that in economic decisions." "As a citizen of Maldives, what I have got to say to the world, is that we may be amongst the first to be impacted by climate change (…) but make no mistake about it - we will not be the last."

Warming waters and fish in the Mediterranean Sea Changes in Juneau, Alaska Alaska and the Maldives…
"What solutions can we find to the modifications brought about by climate change in the Mediterranean? I am a researcher, I study fish and in this field, I see no solution." "As the ice melts there are new places for plants to grow, higher elevations, animals species are moving to different locations. Sometimes that’s good, sometimes we don’t know." "The concern is that glaciers melt, the water goes into the ocean and there go the Maldives. So it’s all related to everybody."

Melting permafrost in Canada GMO’s are not the solution to climate change Rainfall and crops in Mali
"I know of a building in Mayo that was unserviceable after 18 months (…) because the design did not accommodate the melting of the permafrost underneath the building." "What really frightens me are people that have such faith in progress, that they think that technical progress will solve all the problems caused by technical progress." "(…)The farmers must understand the environment they live in and stop hoping that the situation is going to get better every year."

Forests can be allies or enemies in the fight against climate change We should start planting new varieties of trees Coral bleaching in Australia
"Ecosystems can also be important players (…), they can contribute to a vicious cycle in which climate change causes more climate change." "IPCC simulations on the possible changes in the climate (…) are taken very seriously by forest managers, who always think in decades or centuries." "I have been diving on the Great Barrier Reef for 15 years and I have dived in all sorts of different reefs and I have seen how beautiful reefs can be. And since about 2002 I have started to see coral bleaching."

The growing intensity of typhoons in Taiwan Melting glaciers and Alpaca herds in the Andes identities and cultures in danger
"Typhoons usually stay just one day, maybe less than one day. But this one stayed in Taiwan or very close to Taiwan for almost 2 days." "The glaciers provide water to the pastures called "Bofedal", where the alpacas live. Once the glaciers have ceased to exist, they will generate no more water, and these natural pasturelands will disappear." "One must not forget that it is not just a territory that disappears, not just houses and the living environment, it’s also cultures, languages and sometimes even nationalities that disappear."

During the extension of the “6 billion Others” project, we met people around the world who have witnessed change in their daily life because of global warming. “6 billion Others. Climate Voices.” aspires to be an alarm signal, given by not only those who have had their life shattered by the repercussions of climate change, but also by the scientific community.

From the beginning, The French Ministry of Ecology and ADEME (French Environment and Energy Management Agency) supported this project, and made it a reality. “6 billion Others. Climate Voices.” is also supported by the UNITED NATIONS (UNEP, WMO, IPCC, ISDR and UN-Habitat) and Voyageurs du Monde.
