Wanagari Maathai has organized the women of Kenya in an movement, called the Green Belt, which managed to plant some 30 millions of trees, mainly to prevent erosion of arable land. But as her movement was growing, so was the hostility of the dictator of that time: Daniel Arap Moi. She has been imprisoned several times, but did not give up her fight for women’s right, for democratic rights and for environment, which, in her hands, are deeply interwoven. She was the first African Woman to receive a Nobel Price, she was also the first person to receive a Nobel price on environmental grounds.
The debate will be introduced by the screening of the movie ‘Taking Root’ portraying her life, in presence of Alan Dater, co-Director
